Ignite Youth Conference, one of the most powerful gatherings of young people in Australia has just been celebrated in Brisbane. Having had to cancel two conferences last year in Brisbane and Sydney due to Covid 19, and again in Sydney this year, we were all holding our breath and praying strongly that we might avoid another lockdown in Brisbane.
Our prayers were answered. While two of Australia’s most populous states remained in lockdown, the Ignite four day event went ahead and still attracted 800 young people from across the state of Queensland, who came together under the theme of “Unleash”. The vision of unleashing the fire of the Holy Spirit and sending out missionary disciples who have had an intimate encounter with Jesus Christ came to reality as hundreds of young people stood up and accepted the challenge of taking the light of Christ into the world.
The festival like atmosphere included football games (led by a group of seminarians), open air stage presentations, keynote talks, workshops, times of praise and worship, Eucharistic adoration and an opening Mass with Archbishop Mark Coleridge (Archbishop of Brisbane).
